On a dirt road in western Madagascar, a few dozen trees older than most nations rise where a forest used to be.

A Forest Reduced to a Roadside

On Route Nationale 8, about a 30- to 40-minute drive from the port town of Morondava on Madagascar's west coast, the land flattens into rice paddies and scrubby grassland. Then, without much warning, the trees appear: roughly 20 to 25 of them, spaced along a 260-meter run of unpaved road, trunks the color of rust and bark, rising as high as 30 meters with almost nothing at the top but a small tangle of branches, as if each tree had been planted upside down.

These are Grandidier's baobabs, Adansonia grandidieri, and the Malagasy have a name for them that gets closer to the truth than "tree" does: renala, or reniala — "mother of the forest." It is not a metaphor so much as a description of absence. The baobabs standing here are not a forest. They are what is left after one.

What the Forest Used to Be

Madagascar's western coast was once covered in dense tropical dry forest. Over generations, farmers cleared it for cultivation, largely through slash-and-burn agriculture, converting much of the land that now surrounds the avenue into the rice paddies visible on either side of the road today. The baobabs survived that clearing for reasons that are partly practical and partly cultural: their trunks are difficult to fell and slow to burn, and in many Malagasy communities the trees carry spiritual significance that discouraged cutting them down even when everything around them was disappearing. The result is a landscape that reads as designed — a deliberate "avenue" — but is really an accident of what happened to survive.

Adansonia grandidieri is one of eight baobab species recognized worldwide, and one of six found only in Madagascar; a seventh species is native to mainland Africa, and an eighth to northwestern Australia. The genus itself is ancient — a 2024 study on baobab evolution placed the group's origins in Madagascar tens of millions of years ago — but the individual trees on this particular road are, in the scheme of the genus, comparatively young. Tourism and conservation sources commonly cite ages of roughly 800 years and up for the avenue's largest specimens, based on estimates rather than direct testing of these specific trees.

Elsewhere in Madagascar, researchers have gone further: a team using accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating tested two of the largest known Grandidier's baobabs in existence — a giant near Bevoay and a tree known as Tsitakakoike — and returned radiocarbon ages suggesting the trees themselves are on the order of 1,300 to 1,500 years old, structurally complicated by trunks that are multi-stemmed and largely hollow inside, which is typical of very old baobabs and part of why dating them precisely is difficult. That study did not test the avenue's trees directly, but it establishes that Grandidier's baobab is now known to be capable of living well over a millennium — making the avenue's own centuries-old trees plausible rather than exceptional for the species.

An Engineering Problem Disguised as a Tree

Part of what makes a baobab a baobab is water storage. The swollen trunk that gives the tree its instantly recognizable silhouette is a reservoir: a single large, mature baobab can hold up to roughly 120,000 liters of water inside its fibrous, spongy wood, drawn on through Madagascar's long dry season between roughly April and November — not coincidentally, the same window tourism guides recommend for visiting, since the trees are more photogenic against dry-season skies and the unpaved road is easier to reach.

A short distance northwest of the main avenue stands a smaller, separate attraction known as the Baobab Amoureux, or "Baobab Lovers": two trees of a different species, Adansonia za, whose trunks have grown twisted around one another. Local legend holds they represent two lovers, forbidden from marrying in life, who were transformed into trees so they could remain entwined. It is folklore, not botany, but it is treated by guides and Malagasy sources alike as an authentic part of the region's oral tradition rather than an invention for tourists.

From Roadside Curiosity to Natural Monument

For most of the 20th century, the avenue was simply a striking sight along a public road — unprotected, and vulnerable to the same pressures that had already cleared the forest around it: agriculture, fire, and logging. That began to change in July 2007, when the site was granted temporary protected-area status by Madagascar's forestry ministry. In 2015, it was formally designated a natural monument, part of an effort — reportedly aiming to make it the country's first site protected under that specific classification — to give the trees a legal status beyond their informal fame.

Protection has not eliminated the threats. Conservation and travel sources cite ongoing risks from illegal logging, bushfires (some originating from nearby land-clearing), and agricultural runoff from the surrounding paddies, compounded by the broader pressures of climate change on an already-isolated population of trees with no forest left to buffer them. An ecotourism initiative led by the Malagasy NGO Fanamby, launched around 2014, has worked to build visitor infrastructure — the site now draws a substantial number of tourists annually, most stopping at sunrise or sunset, when the low light turns the trunks a deep orange-red and the bare crowns stand out starkly against the sky.

Why the Avenue Still Matters

The Avenue of the Baobabs endures as one of Madagascar's most photographed landmarks in part because it compresses an entire environmental story into a single, walkable stretch of road: what a forest looked like, what replaced it, and what a small number of trees can outlast when they are simply too large, too slow, and too meaningful to cut down. The avenue is not a monument to a forest that was saved. It is a monument to what a forest leaves behind when it isn't.
